Add Dropbox to the Send To Menu in Windows 7

Dropbox is one of the coolest utilities available today to backup and share files and folders online. If you want easier access to it, you might want to add it to the Send To Menu in the Context Menu.

Add Dropbox to Send To Menu in Vista & Windows 7

First navigate to the following path by copying the following into the Windows Explorer address bar or the Search box in the Start Menu.

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

If you have Dropbox under Favorites right-click on the folder and drag it into the SendTo folder. If it’s not under your Favorites in Explorer, just drag it to the SendTo folder from whatever directory you have it in.

When you release the folder you’ll have the option to move, copy, or create a shortcut…you can certainly move it there if you want, but we’re going to create a shortcut.

Now when you right-click on a file or folder you’ll have the option to send it to your Dropbox folder.

If you have other shared folders in your Dropbox folder you can add them to the SendTo Menu as well using the same method. Like in this example we added a shared Dropbox folder we use for testing geek stuff.

Add Dropbox to Send To Menu in XP

In XP go to Control Panel and Folder Options then select Show hidden files and folders.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\SendTo (where User Name is the name of your computer) and create a shortcut to your Dropbox folder.

Now you have your Dropbox folder added to Send To in the Context Menu…

Microsoft Releases Enhanced Mitigation Experience Security Toolkit

Microsoft today released the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET), a new tool to help IT administrators send anti-exploit mitigations like ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) and DEP (Data Execution Prevention) to older versions of Windows.

Older Windows Systems, open to vulnerabilities

Address space layout randomization (ASLR) is a security technique which works by randomly re-arranging the positions of key data area. This usually includes the base of the executable plus the position of , heap, libraries and the stack, which is found in a process‘s address space.

Address space randomization is a process that blocks some types of security attacks by making it more difficult for an attacker to predict target addresses.

Data Execution Prevention (DEP), on the other hand, is a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help prevent malicious code from running on a system.

he EMET tool, works by applying security mitigation technologies to random applications in order to block exploitations that occur through common attack protocols.

It will also add anti-exploit mitigations to existing third-party software that do not currently use mitigation offerings. This feature comes in addition to implementing ASLR and DEP on older versions of the Windows operating system.

There are several features that it has.

* “Structured Error Handling Overwrite Protection (SEHOP) prevents Structured Exception Handling (SEH) overwrite exploitation by performing SEH chain validation.

* Mandatory address space layout randomization (ASLR), as well as non-ASLR-aware modules on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7.

* Dynamic Data Execution Prevention marks portions of a process’s memory non-executable, making it difficult to exploit memory corruption vulnerabilities.

* NULL page allocation allocates the first page of memory before program initialization and blocks attackers from taking advantage of NULL references in user mode.

* Heap Spray Allocation pre-allocates memory addresses to block common attacks that fill a process’s heap with specially crafted content.

* Export address table (EAT) uses hardware breakpoints to filter access to the EAT of kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll, blocks access if the instruction pointer is not inside a module, and breaks current common metasploit shellcodes.”

One of the cool little features that arose from the ashes of the disaster known as Windows Vista was the Reliability Monitor. A little-known tool which is almost hidden within the action center, the Reliability tool is great for tracking your computers reliability.

“Reliability Monitor is an advanced tool that measures hardware and software problems and other changes to your computer. It provides a stability index that ranges from 1 (the least stable) to 10 (the most stable). You can use the index to help evaluate the reliability of your computer. Any change you make to your computer or problem that occurs on your computer affects the stability index.”

Per Microsoft, the Reliability Monitor is intended for advanced computer users, such as software developers and network administrators, but it is easy to use, so even moderate users will have no problem using the tool to track their system over time.

There are two ways to find your PC’s Reliability history:

You can use Windows Search and begin typing the word ‘Reliability’ until the option shows.

Or

Right-click on the white flag in your taskbar to open Action Center.

Click Maintenance. Then, under Check for solutions to problem reports, click View reliability history.

In Reliability Monitor, you can:

* Click any event on the graph to view its details.

* Click Days, or Weeks, to view the stability index over a specific period of time.

* Click items in the Action column to view more information about it.

* Click View all problem reports to view only the problems that have occurred on your computer. This view does not include the other computer events that show up in Reliability Monitor, such as events about software installation.

The Reliability Monitor is a very basic program with a very basic use. It’s one of the many useful tools provided natively in Windows 7 which can help you keep your PC on the right track.

Safari Browser Update Opens Up Extensions

Windows/Mac: Safari 5.0.1 is out, and it's much more than just a bug fix. Installing the update activates Safari's new extensions platform, which has roughly 100 extensions available through the Safari Extensions Gallery.

From an early look around, the majority of Safari's extensions are more akin to GreaseMonkey-style scripts than full-on Firefox extensions. Most appear to be related to the functionality of a single site, or making certain webapps easier to access—not that there's anything wrong with that. Tools and offerings for Gmail, Instapaper, eBay, and other popular services abound.

IE8 Blocked over 1 Billion Malware Attacks

With the help of the SmartScreen filter, IE 8, Microsoft’s standard Internet browser prevented 1 billion malware attacks or downloads. In a Microsoft Windows Blog on Friday, Microsoft noted that the growing number of socially engineering attacks like malware are posing a greater threat on the Internet. They are one of the most common risks to people’s online safety. Having introduced malware protection in Internet Explorer 8 as part of the SmartScreen Filter it has been a very successful ad on to a commonly used product.

How it Works

First the SmartScreen Filter looks and evaluates the URLs coming into the website, it follows up with an inspection of the associated servers of origin. When the software spots a server as containing malicious content, SmartScreen displays a warning, saying that it is unsafe to browse to that respective site. The user is then given the opportunity to continue forward to the page or return back to their home page without downloading any content.

Here are some quick facts of interest about the Internet Explorer and malware as IE 8 hit this 1 billion blocks milestone:

* In August 2009 and March 10, the NSS Labs have recognized the Internet Explorer 8 SmartScreen Filter was a leader in protection against Socially Engineered Malware. The reports also compared Internet Explorer 8 to Firefox and Chrome, and others browsers.

* The SmartScreen malware filter blocking rates continue to improve because there is a continued effort to improve the SmartScreen service program at the back-end. In comparison, an August 2009 report showed that the filter blocked about 70 million attempts to download malware. This was about 18 million blocks per month. But at the time,Net Applications reported that only 15% of the Internet population used IE 8. Now speed forward. In the last two months, IE8 blocked about 100 million attempts to download malware. Furthermore, last month, according to Net Applications, the number of users of IE 8 was almost 26% of the Internet population. this translates to about more than 1.7 times more users working with Internet Explorer 8 than last August 2009; however, the blocking rare is 5 times more malware month on month.

Microsoft has launched a new self-support service called Fix-it for Windows XP and Vista. Fix-it Center finds and fixes many common PC and device problems automatically. It also helps prevent new problems by proactively checking for known issues and installing updates. Fix it Center helps to consolidate the many steps of diagnosing and repairing a problem into an automated tool that does the work for you. The combination of desktop client and back-end service gives users of older versions ofWindows some of the same functionality that only Windows 7 provides by default, Lori Brownell, Microsoft's general manager of product quality and online support, said.

The Fixit Center client is currently in beta, and can be downloaded free of charge. "Irrespective of what versions people are running, and many aren't running Windows 7 today, we need to support those customers just as well," said Brownell, explaining Microsoft's decision. Microsoft used the same technology that powers the scripted diagnostic feature within Windows 7, dubbed Action Center - in some cases, the same code - to craft the client software for Windows XP and Vista.

From Windows 3.1 to Windows Vista, the Windows operating system has taken many giant leaps. And while Vista received a lukewarm reception from some users, Windows 7 is likely to be remembered for addressing those criticisms.

In fact, there aren't many changes to the overall look of Windows 7 when compared to Windows Vista. Instead, Microsoft seems to have paid attention to the feedback it received and created an OS that is not only stable, but also very capable.

So what is new in Windows 7? Here are 18 cool things Windows 7 does that Vista doesn't.

1. Shake 'em away

Ever had 10 Notepad, two Powerpoint and 50 Outlook windows open? Want to minimise all of them except the most important one? In Windows 7, you can grab the top of the window and shake it about to scare away all of the other open windows. Simple.

2. Jumplists

Jumplists are a new feature that give you the option to view a list of recently accessed files by application, even when the application isn't open, by right-clicking on the application's icon in the taskbar. It also allows you to quickly access a favourite playlist without opening your media player. Jumplists can also be found integrated into the Start Menu.

3. A step forward in previewing

In Vista, hovering over a minimised window on the taskbar would provide a preview of the window. In Windows 7, a similar preview pops up which also gives the option to close a window (within the preview), along with a full-size 'peek'. You can also press Win + T to scroll along previews in the taskbar.

4. Snap into place

Simply drag your window to the left or right edge of the desktop to snap and resize the window to one half of the screen. Drag the window to the top to maximise it. A pretty neat idea made neater by the use of the keyboard shortcuts (Win + respective arrow keys). No longer do you have to frustratingly position the mouse at the edge of the window to resize it.

5. XP Mode

This time, you do not have to slap your head that same way when Vista would not run an XP application. For those XP applications that do not work under Windows 7, you can download XP Mode free from the Microsoft website and run XP applications in an emulated XP environment in Windows 7. Imagine Parallels on Mac OS X without the need to fish out money on an extra OS.

6. An easier and quicker way to adjust multiple displays
Do you constantly connect your computer to different external monitors or projectors, especially at work? Try Win + P, and duplicating or extending your display to the other monitor takes just a second. Win + P presents you with an Alt + Tab style menu, which is ideal if you give a lot of presentations at work on your laptop.

7. A personalised Stage for your device
With the new 'Device and Printers' button on the Start Menu, devices which are connected to your computer can have their own Stage. This Device Stage presents supported devices with a photo-realistic render and a link to the vendor's website, along with other updates and useful information (such as firmware updates and manuals).

8. (Almost) eliminate the notification area!

What, I can even get rid of the clock and volume icons? Yes. Click the arrow that gives access to the overflow icons in the notification area and click 'customise'. Select each icon and click 'hide icon and notifications' to remove it. Clean.

9. Problem Steps Recorder

The 'Problem Steps Recorder' lets you record a particular problem you are having with your PC so you can send it to someone who may be able to help. Click 'Record', and a screenshot is taken with every mouse click, allowing comments to be added in between if required. These screenshots (and comments, if any) are placed in a well-formatted HTML document that is placed inside a zipped folder on your desktop - ideal to be attached to an email.

10. A brand new Magnifier tool
If you are, or someone you know, is visually impaired, then the Windows 7 Magnifier provides two options for providing a bigger display. One of which is using the traditional dock (which took up a lot of the screen) and the other being a rectangular lens that is stuck to the cursor (meaning there is no loss of workspace).

11. A new way to preview your music files

Opening and listening to an MP3 is a lot more snappier with Windows 7 due to its new smaller preview player, presenting you with album art, basic music functionality and a link to the full-blown Windows Media Player. This is an obvious attempt to mimic the preview feature of Mac OS X, but it is very well executed.

12. Homegroup Networking
In Vista (or, frankly, any Windows OS), creating a shared folder over a network at home could be a bit of a pain. In Windows 7, using the 'Homegroup' wizard, check the default folders you would like to share. This will give you a passcode that will have to be entered in another computer on the same network to share the files. Sounds too good to be true? There is a catch: only a Windows 7 computer can join a Homegroup.

13. Stream Music directly to another computer

If you do create a Homegroup, Windows Media Player allows you to stream music directly to another computer. So, instead of listening to music through your measly laptop speakers, you can wirelessly stream to the 7.1 Surround Sound Speakers of your PC in your living room, without stepping away from your laptop. Sweet.

14. Action Center

The Action Center is the new Security Center for Windows 7, along with other notifications such as updates and access to the improved troubleshooting and recovery using restore point facilities. Basically, it is everything windows usually annoys you with, rolled into one place with one icon in the notification bar. If you find the alerts irritating, you can check out this tip to make the Windows 7 Action Center less annoying.

15. Pin just about anything to the new Windows Taskbar

Imagine a blank Mac OS X Dock with the start menu, the notifications bar and the improved 'Show Desktop' button added to it. Drag just about anything on to it and the associated application will place itself on the translucent taskbar, with an option to open the file in the Jumplist.

16. Improved Touch Navigation

Windows 7 has much improved touch navigation. The larger taskbar with squarer icons makes it a lot easier to navigate with your fingers, and Macbook-like multi-touch gestures on various applications could change the way you interact with windows. Subtle enhancements such as a larger Start Menu appearing when Touchscreen hardware is detected also help.

17. Native ISO Burner

There are those times when you inevitably have to burn an ISO file (such as when you have to copy a downloaded Windows 7 beta or RC) to a DVD. With Windows 7 you do not need to download third-party software (some of which are pretty confusing to use). Double-clicking on an ISO file will take you to a window that allows you to change the disc burner drive. Click 'Burn'. After a while, your disc is ready. Simple.

18. Native calibration tools

If you tend to hook up your computer to an HDTV or care about getting the highest quality from your monitor, then the in-built basic and easy-to-use calibration tools built into Windows 7 will please you.

Microsoft still has not launched its Windows 7 operating system, but the software giant has already started working on the new version of the Windows 7, dubbed as Windows 8. According to sources, the company is also forming relationships with major partners, including Intel, AMD, HP and IBM for the new platform.

Is Windows 8 coming in 2012?
Windows 8 may be launched in 2012, assuming Microsoft adhers to its plans to release a new operating system after every three years but the release date would ultimately be determined by product quality, reviews and feedbacks. The company has not announced anything officially, but Steve Ballmer has suggested that improved management and voice recognition are their development priorities for the new platform.

What’s new in Windows 8?
Windows 7 is set to launch worldwide on October 22, and will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. However, the next version of the operating system will have 128-bit architecture, sources added. As the promotions and the marketing tactics for the Windows 7 operating system heads toward its peak, a few details are starting to surface about its likely successor.

The earlier version, Windows Vista is also available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, but has failed to attract consumers.
